Born in Detroit, MI. Writer and production executive who entered American film as the producer of THE GOLDEN BOAT (1990). In 1991, Schamus began a long and very productive association with director Ang Lee. Their collaborations (with Schamus and Lee collaborating on writing and producing and Lee usually directing) include TUI SHOU / PUSHING HANDS (1992), HSI YEN / THE WEDDING BANQUET (1993), YIN SHI NAN NU / EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN (1994), SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (1995), THE ICE STORM (1997), RIDE WITH THE DEVIL (1999), WO HU CANG LONG / CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (2000), TORTILLA SOUP (2001), HULK (2003), BROKEBACK MOUNAIN (2005), SE, JIE / LUST, CAUTION (2007), andA LITTLE GAME (announced for 2009).
Schamus' other notable producing credits include THE BROTHERS McMULLEN (1995, exec. prod.), SHE'S THE ONE (1996), BUFFALO SOLDIERS (2001, exec. prod.), and AUTO FOCUS (2002, exec. prod.). Schamus was a partner in Good Machine, an indie-film company, with friends Ted Hope and David Linde. It was bought by Universal Pictures in 2002 and merged into a new division of the studio called Focus Films. He won the NBC Screenwriter's Tribute from the Nantucket (MA) Film Festival in 2002.
