A 2000 MFA graduate of the Columbia University School of the Arts Film Division, Stein entered American film as a script supervisor for THE SNOW FIELD (1996). For her Columbia Masters Thesis film, she wrote and directed ONE DAY CROSSING (1999). It was nominated for an Academy Award® and won the Gold Medal for best narrative film at 27th Annual Student Academy Awards and the Directors Guild of America's Student Film Award. She produced and directed SOLIDARITY (2005), a Polish-American co-produced short film about a couple in 1982 communist Poland, and she directed an episode of the TV series "Law & Order" in 2006.
