Born in Meadville, PA; educated at Edinboro State University (PA). Dangerously sultry screen lead. After winning the title of Miss Pennsylvania, she moved to New York, where her well-scrubbed beauty brought her work in commercials. Shortly after settling in Hollywood, she debuted in her first film, STARDUST MEMORIES (1980), but it was not until ten years and several varying performances later that her performance as an overaggressive wife in TOTAL RECALL (1990) established her as a screen presence. Notorious for the way she uncrossed her legs in the interrogation scene in BASIC INSTINCT (1992), her performance as the icy femme fatale in that movie made her one of Hollywood's leading female box-office attractions.

Since her nominated role in CASINO, she has starred in such features as DIABOLIQUE and LAST DANCE (both 1996), SPHERE, THE MIGHTY, ANTZ (voice - Princess Bala) and JUNKET WHORE (all 1998), GLORIA, THE MUST and SIMPATICO (all 1999), PICKING UP THE PIECES and BEAUTIFUL JOE (both 2000), COLD CREEK MANOR (2003), A DIFFERENT LOYALTY and CATWOMAN (both 2004), BROKEN FLOWERS (2005), ALPHA DOG, BASIC INSTINCT 2 and BOBBY (all 2006), IF I HAD KNOWN I WAS A GENIUS, WHEN A MAN FALLS IN THE FOREST and DEMOCRAZY (all 2007), THE YEAR OF GETTING TO KNOW US and FIVE DOLLARS A DAY (both scheduled for release in 2008), and DIRTY TRICKS (scheduled for release in 2010).

Her second husband (1984-87) was producer Michael Greenburg. In 2004, Stone divorced newspaper editor Phil Bronstein after five years of marriage; they have one child.
