One of only two cinematographers to win back-to-back Academy Awards® (the other is Leon Shamroy), he grew up in Cleveland, OH. Moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19 and enrolled in college. Got a job as a part-time production assistant with David Wolper Productions and began working as an assistant cameraman on documentaries. After graduation, he worked on very low-budget features, documentaries and commercials. This eventually led to opportunities to work on more mainstream films with many different cinematographers and directors.
Toll worked in the 1980s as a camera operator and d.p. for television movies and commercials. Some of those credits include TOM HORN (1980), ZORRO THE GAY BLADE (1981), SCARFACE (1983), THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN and SWEET DREAMS (both 1985), PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (1986), BLACK WIDOW (1987) and THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR (1988). Feature film cinematography credits include THE FORFEIT (1991), WIND (1992), LEGENDS OF THE FALL (1994), BRAVEHEART (1995), JACK (1996), THE RAINMAKER (1997), THE THIN RED LINE (1998), SIMPATICO (1999), ALMOST FAMOUS (2000), CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN and VANILLA SKY (both 2001), THE LAST SAMURAI (2003), ELIZABETHTOWN (2005), SERAPHIM FALLS (2006), RISE and GONE BABY GONE (both 2007), and TROPIC THUNDER (2008). Toll has been married to Oscar®-winning makeup artist Lois Burwell since 1998. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Cinematographers Branch) 2000-2003.
