Wilder's bouncy single "Break My Stride" on his 1983 debut album went to No. 5 on the charts. The follow-up bombed and his name faded into obscurity. Now Wilder has returned to head of the charts, not as a star but as producer of No Doubt's multi-platinum album "Tragic Kingdom." After years of writing for others and taking production jobs, Wilder was asked by an Interscope A&R agent to work with the struggling ska-rock band No Doubt.
"It was a grueling year and a half on that album ... constantly redefining and redirecting -- very painful labor," he said.
Does pop stardom still appeal to him? Not a chance, he said.
"This way I don't have to be a recording artist and act 16 at 44," he said.
