Born in New York City. Prior to his work on MULAN (1998), Matthew Wilder was probably best known for writing and performing the early '80s pop hit "Break My Stride." His song "Wild Women Do" was used in PRETTY WOMAN (1990).
Wilder's bouncy single "Break My Stride" on his 1983 debut album went to No. 5 on the charts. The follow-up bombed and his name faded into obscurity. Now Wilder has returned to head of the charts, not as a star but as producer of No Doubt's multi-platinum album "Tragic Kingdom." After years of writing for others and taking production jobs, Wilder was asked by an Interscope A&R agent to work with the struggling ska-rock band No Doubt. "It was a grueling year and a half on that album ... constantly redefining and redirecting -- very painful labor," he said. Does pop stardom still appeal to him? Not a chance, he said. "This way I don't have to be a recording artist and act 16 at 44," he said.
