Born in Chicago, IL; MFA from the American Film Institute. Writer, producer and director who began in American television with the series "Family" (1976). After writing and directing several made-for-TV movies, Zwick made his feature debut directing ABOUT LAST NIGHT... (1986). He followed this with GLORY (1989), LEAVING NORMAL (1992), LEGENDS OF THE FALL (1994, also producer), and COURAGE UNDER FIRE (1996). He directed his first screenplay in 1998 with THE SIEGE. Other feature producing credits in the 90s include DANGEROUS BEAUTY and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (both 1998). He also continued to work in television, most notably as writer, producer and director of episodes of "thirtysomething".
Zwick wrote, produced and directed THE LAST SAMURAI (2003) and DEFIANCE (2008). He produced and directed 2006's BLOOD DIAMOND. Other producing/executive producing credits during this period include TRAFFIC (2000), I AM SAM (2001), LONE STAR STATE OF MIND and ABANDON (both 2002), and the TV series "Quarterlife". He and partner Marshall Herskovitz operate The Bedford Falls Company in Santa Monica, CA. Zwick is married to actress Liberty Godshall. His brother is director Joel Zwick (b. 1942).
