Born in Victoria, NSW, Australia. Cinematographer who entered Australian television with the 1972 series "The Spoiler." Working with Aussie directors like Peter Weir during the 1970s, his first film to achieve international recognition was GALLIPOLI (1981). Other notable d.p. credits include THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY (1982), TENDER MERCIES (1983), A SOLDIER'S STORY and MRS. SOFFEL (both 1984), BURKE & WILLS (1985), 'CROCADILE' DUNDEE (1986), THE PERFECTIONIST (1987), 'CROCADILE' DUNDEE II and THE RESCUE (both 1988), IN COUNTRY (1989), PRISONERS OF THE SUN and ALMOST AN ANGEL (both 1990), SWEET TALKER (1991), TURTLE BEACH, WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP and FOREVER YOUNG (all 1992), COBB (1994), OPERATION DUMBO DROP (1995), TIN CUP (1996), LIAR LIAR (1997), DOCTOR DOOLITTLE (1998), COMPANY MAN (2000), SERENADES and AMERICAN OUTLAWS (both 2001) and MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (2003).
