Born in Silver Spring, MD. Graduated Mamaroneck (NY) High School; classmate of director Bennett Miller; grauate of Columbia University (NYC). Also friends from childhood of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. From 1991, Futterman worked as an actor in several television series and made-for-TV movies. His feature film acting credits include THE FISHER KING (1991), PASSED AWAY and BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY... THEY GET EVEN (both 1992), THE BIRDCAGE, BREATHING ROOM and FAR HARBOR (all 1996), SHOOTING FISH (1997), 1999 (1998), URBANIA (2000), ENOUGH (2002), A MIGHTY HEART (2007), and RIGHTEOUS KILL (scheduled for release in 2008). CAPOTE is his first produced screenplay.

Since 2000, Futterman has been married to TV writer Anya Epstein, granddaughter/grandniece of screenwriters Philip G. and Julius J. Epstein. They have two daughters.

Futterman was invited to join A.M.P.A.S. in 2006.
