Born in Sussex, England. Respected playwright whose work, from his first produced play Slag in 1970 to Knuckle, Pravda, and A Map of the World, has examined contemporary social and political problems and the difficulty of moral and emotional expression. He wrote and directed the acclaimed TV films "Licking Hitler" (1977) and "Dreams of Leaving" (1980) before adapting his play Plenty for the screen in 1985, with Fred Schepisi directing Meryl Streep in the leading role of a woman who finds fulfillment during World War 2 -- and never again. Very soon after, Hare wrote and directed WETHERBY (1985), a bleak story with Vanessa Redgrave as a schoolteacher who witnesses a grad student's suicide. Since then, he has written and directed PARIS BY NIGHT (1988) and STRAPLESS (1989), and adapted THE SECRET RAPTURE (1993) from his play. He also directed an episode of TV's "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."
Other notable credits include "The Absence of War" (1995, TV - play), THE DESIGNATED MOURNER (1997, director), THE HOURS and VIA DOLOROSA (both 2000, writer), and screenplays for MY ZINC BED (from his play), THE READER and MURDER IN SAMARKAND (all scheduled for release in 2008).
