Born in New York City, Bennett Miller made the acclaimed 1998 documentary portrait The Cruise, about New York City tour guide/mystic Timothy "Speed" Levitch.

Miller met CAPOTE screenwriter Dan Futterman when they were twelve years old; they have been friends for 25 years. The two of them met Philip Seymour Hoffman while attening a 1984 summer theatre program in Saratoga Springs, NY and remained friends.

Miller is also an acclaimed director of commercials. He is currently in production on his second dramatic feature, FOXCATCHER (scheduled for release in 2009). He was invited to join A.M.P.A.S. in 2006.
