Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Film scoring credits include SHE DANCES ALONE (1981), AMORES PERROS (2000), 11'09"01 - SEPTEMBER 11 (2002, segment "Mexico"), 21 GRAMS (2003), DIARIOS DE MOTOCICLETA / THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES and RENDEZVOUS (both 2004), BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and NORTH COUNTRY (both 2005), BABEL (2006), and ON THE ROAD (scheduled for release in 2009). His songs or performances have also been used in THE INSIDER (1999), SHREK 2 and COLLATERAL (both 2004), and INTO THE WILD (2007). Santaolalla co-wrote CAFE DE LOS MAESTROS (2008) with Miguel Kohan. The film features interviews with the musicians and singers from Argentina's golden days of Tango.
