Born in Kitzbühel, Tyrol, Austria. Documentary filmmaker who studied at the University of Performing Arts in Vienna. He emigrated to France in 1994 and wrote a thesis about French director Ciryl Collard for his B.A. from the University of Paris. Sauper's first film was WER FÜRCHTET SICH VORM SCHWARZEN MANN (1988). Other directing credits include ERA MAX (1989), PIRATEN IN ÖSTERREICH (1990), DER BLASI (1993), ICH HABE DIE ANGENEHME AUFGABE (1993), ALSO SCHLAFWANDLE ICH AM HELLICHTEN TAGE ('So I Sleepwalk in Broad Daylight,' 1994 - also producer), KISANGANY DIARY (1997, also producer), SUELES AVEC NOS HISTOIRES ('Alone with Our Stories,' 2001) and DARWIN'S NIGHTMARE (2004, also producer).
Sauper lives in Paris and teaches film classes in Europe and the US when not directing his documentaries.
