Born in Los Angeles, CA; graduated from USC School of Cinema-Television (1985). Son of producer Jack Schwartzman (1932-1994) and actress Talia Shire; nephew of producer-director Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola and George Lucas wrote his letters of recommendation to film schools after he beat them at Risk.

Entered American film as cinematographer for YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE (1988). Other notable d.p. credits include ROCKULA and RED SURF (both 1990), BENNY & JOON (1993), AIRHEADS (1994), A PYROMANIAC'S LOVE STORY (1995), MR. WRONG and THE ROCK (both 1996), CONSPIRACY THEORY (1997), ARMADEDDON (1998), EDTV (1999), PEARL HARBOR (2001), THE ROOKIE (2002), SEABISCUIT (2003), MEET THE FOCKERS (2004), NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS and THE BUCKET LIST (both 2007), and NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2: ESCAPE FROM THE SMITHSONIAN (slated for release in 2009).

His brother is actor Robert (Schwartzman) Carmine (b. 1982).
