  • Stage-trained British character actor Tom Wilkinson has turned up with increasing regularity on American movie screens in such roles as Mr. Dashwood in Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" (1995), Beaumont in Steven Hopkins' "The Ghost and the Darkness" (1996) and Professor Loyen in Bille August's "Smilla's Sense of Snow" (1997). In "The Full Monty" (1997), Peter Cattaneo cast him as the authority figure he so often plays, but with a twist. His Gerald, a supervisor at a steel mill and also a ballroom dancer, loses his authority as soon as the steel mill sacks him from his middle-management position. In spite of their dislike for him as a boss, the unemployed steelworkers (led by Robert Carlyle) bring him on board as their "choreographer", and in a comic turn, Wilkinson gets to bare his bum with the boys. He displayed considerably more as a 19th Century photography pioneer who embarks on a love affair with Minnie Driver in "The Governess" (1998) and capped off the year as the "money" behind an Elizabethan production in the rollicking "Shakespeare in Love".
